Coble And Mgruff Highlight Crime Prevention

A crime-fighting dog and a U.S. Representative from North Carolina recently met to discuss ways to highlight the efforts of law enforcement personnel during October, which is Crime Prevention Month. On Thursday, October 22, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) had the opportunity to meet with McGruff the Crime Dog, while the law enforcement pooch was in the nation's capital.

October is Crime Prevention Month, when citizens and law enforcement in cities and towns across the United States mobilize to strengthen their communities to prevent crime. To help celebrate the good work of citizens and law enforcement nationwide, Congressman Coble met in Washington, D.C., with leading representatives of the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), and was photographed with McGruff the Crime Dog ®, our nation's leading symbol of crime prevention.

"Crime prevention is everyone's business," said Rep. Coble, "and I am proud of the ongoing work of citizens and law enforcement personnel in the 6th District and across North Carolina. It is important that we take every opportunity to thank local law enforcement and engaged citizens who work together to prevent crime and the fear associated with it. Crime Prevention Month offers us this opportunity. And I found McGruff to be an easy dog to hunt with."

Coble is the previous chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. (In the attached photo, meeting with Coble and McGruff were Sheriff James H. Branch, Jr., of Culpeper County, Virginia, on the left, and Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson of Loudoun County, Virginia, on the right.)

Both the National Sheriffs Association (NSA) and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) are leading national resources providing community safety and crime prevention tools tested and valued by local law enforcement agencies and communities nationwide.

NCPC is the nation's center of excellence for crime prevention. A private, non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, NCPC's primary mission is to be the nation's leader in helping people keep themselves, their families and their communities safe from crime. Through a variety of materials, programs, public service campaigns, training curricula and websites, NCPC enables families and neighborhoods to create healthy and safe communities for children and youth.

The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) is the largest association of law enforcement professionals in the United States, representing more than 3,000 elected sheriffs across the nation, and a total membership of more than 20,000. NSA is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the level of professionalism among sheriffs, their deputies, and others in the field of criminal justice and public safety. Throughout its 68-year history, NSA has served as an information clearinghouse for sheriffs, deputies, chiefs of police, other law enforcement professionals, state governments and the federal government.
